Are you currently working to boost your search rankings? Then one metric you should be paying attention to is domain authority (DA).
We’ll discuss DA in more depth below but what you should know is it’s a ranking system to determine the authority of a website. In the world of SEO, authority is like a website’s strength as compared to others.
Our FREE Domain Authority Checker Tool (powered by Moz) will tell you a site’s DA, page authority (PA), ranking, and the number of external links. And with our tool, you can enter as many as 10 URLs to compare multiple sites at the same time.
Below is an example. We picked some of the biggest brands on the Internet and ran them through this tool to show you how the results will look.
Obviously, the results won’t be this high if you’re a small business collecting data on your competitors. These sites have such high DA because of their content quality, backlinks, and millions of monthly visitors.
As you can see above, each URL is listed out in a chart so you can compare them all. DA is measured from 1 to 100. These examples each have DAs of 90 or more, which is practically perfect.
PA speaks to individual pages and how they’ll rank. It’s also measured from 1 to 100. Rank in the fourth column goes from 1-10 and the last column shows you how many links are going from the URL to another site.

Now is the moment you’ve all been waiting for! What is domain authority and why should I care about it?
DA is actually a concept developed by Moz to help measure the authority of sites. While authority does play a role in Google ranking, DA is not a ranking factor. Instead, it’s a way to make informed predictions.
As we said above, DA is measured from 1 to 100.
Moz states that it’s calculated by “evaluating multiple factors, including linking root domains and the total number of links, into a single DA score. This score can then be used when comparing websites or tracking the ‘ranking strength’ of a website over time.”
DA and ranking are constantly fluctuating, so it’s a good idea to use a tool like this to track how your site is doing.
There are several ways to influence your site’s domain authority. Your first step should be to start tracking DA, then working on ways to drive your number up.
Keep in mind there are many factors at play in the Google algorithm. All of those factors need to be considered when measuring the overall strength of your site.
With that being said, there are a few things to do that could affect your DA.
Getting more backlinks is one of the most effective ways. Another site is likely to give you a backlink because they trust you. Therefore, having more backlinks makes you authoritative.
Here at The HOTH, we offer a Guest Post product that helps you get more backlinks from sites with high DA.
You can also reach out directly to sites you think would be interested in linking up. Most of the time, though, backlinks are created naturally.
Focus on improving the quality of your content. Sites are more likely to link to your blogs if they’re high-quality. Sharing some of this content across social media also demonstrates that people are interested in what you have to say.
And, finally, make sure your entire site is SEO optimized.
Domain authority is incredibly important and here’s why. There’s a ton of junk and spam on the internet, and unfortunately, not every website is interested in being authoritative or trustworthy.
By measuring DA, you can determine what sites are strong and then avoid the others.
There is a term in SEO called “link juice.” It’s a concept referring to the amount of authority or value passed from one site to another. If you’re lucky enough to get a backlink from a site with high DA, that “link juice” will be passed on to you.
Google will also notice this and increase your position on the search engine results page or SERP.
This relationship also works in reverse. When you give a backlink to a site with lower DA you are passing on your authority to them.
It’s hard to trust everyone on the internet these days but DA helps you recognize the good sites.
By now you’ve learned a lot about domain authority and how it’s influenced. The last thing we’ll share with you is what to do next?
Collecting all of this valuable data is useless without a strategy in place. First and foremost, you should know your competition.
Don’t focus on powerhouses like Microsoft or Apple, for example, instead find businesses that are similar to yours. They should have a site about the same size as yours, a similar DA ranking, and content that closely resembles what you post.
Start examining their “link profiles” to see what links they’re getting from other sites and consider whether you should try getting one from them as well.
The more high-quality backlinks you can get, the higher your DA will become.

Moz domain authority is a score that predicts the ability of a website to rank in search engines. DA and PA are measured on a logarithmic scale from 0 to 100. A low domain authority score means your website and its pages do not have much potential to rank highly in search engines. A high domain authority score means that your domain’s pages are more likely to rank highly in search results.

When you perform a domain authority check with this tool, you’ll also get a score for page authority.
PA is a similar score to DA that indicates the likelihood of individual pages to rank rather than the website as a whole. Enter individual page URL’s on any website into the bulk DA checker to get the PA score for them as well.
Moz uses over 100 factors to calculate domain authority. These factors include:
To improve your website’s DA you need to build up the factors that influence DA.
Links from other websites to yours are a key factor. Backlinks from other websites are like votes: the more backlinks a website gets, the higher that site’s DA.
Backlinks from a website with a higher DA are usually higher quality than backlinks from a website with a lower DA. So keep in mind that not all votes are equal.
HOTH Guest Post allows you to add links to your site with a DA of your choice, from DA20-DA50.
It’s easier to attract links to your website by publishing quality content on it. Not only do search engines like to see fresh content being published regularly by your website, but that content itself can get natural links provided it’s high quality, relevant, and original.
If your website needs more and/or better content on it, check out HOTH Blogger.
